A tiny witch walks down the pavement hand in hand with a skeleton, and as you turn the corner a long shadow makes you jump. It\u2019s only a coat hanging behind a window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then comes the laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s what <strong>Halloween in Madrid<\/strong> is all about: a little bit of a chill and a whole lot of fun shared together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city is home to flower-filled altars, stations frozen in time and legends told in hushed voices. And also to a museum where your own eyes become part of the game. Here are eight ideas to help you choose yours. Where to begin?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Plans steeped in tradition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halloween isn\u2019t the only celebration at this time of year. In Madrid, pumpkins and candles share the season with traditional sweets and Mexican marigolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Visit the Mega Day of the Dead Altar at Casa de M\u00e9xico<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you step through the door, the scent reaches you before anything else: copal, flowers, wax. From 2 October to 8 November, <strong>Casa de M\u00e9xico en Espa\u00f1a<\/strong>, on Calle Alberto Aguilera, once again builds its <strong>Mega Day of the Dead Altar<\/strong>. This year it pays tribute to Agust\u00edn Lara, among marigold-covered graves and candlelit paths that recreate a cemetery in Michoac\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s striking is how you feel when you leave. Here, death isn\u2019t frightening: it is remembered, sung about and celebrated. Admission is free and, around the altar, there are make-up, floral art and storytelling workshops worth checking out on their website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Celebrate the Day of the Dead at Mercado de Prosperidad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some celebrations are best enjoyed in the neighbourhood. From 29 to 31 October, <strong>Mercado de Prosperidad<\/strong>, on Calle L\u00f3pez de Hoyos, bursts into colour with its <strong>Fiesta de los Muertos<\/strong>: a large altar, flowers, mariachis and Mexican food to sample from stall to stall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s an unhurried plan. The kind where you end up with a taco in your hand, a song stuck in your head and the feeling of having travelled without leaving Madrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Try huesos de santo, bu\u00f1uelos de viento and pan de muerto<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as the pumpkins start to go out, <strong>All Saints\u2019 Day<\/strong> arrives. The windows of Madrid\u2019s pastry shops fill up with <strong>egg-yolk-filled huesos de santo and bu\u00f1uelos de viento (light cream puffs)<\/strong> that disappear in two bites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year they can share the table with pan de muerto. This soft Mexican sweet bread, scented with orange blossom, also appears in some of the city\u2019s bakeries at this time of year. Two traditions, two ways of sweetening memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Plans full of mystery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the most special Halloween activities in Madrid don\u2019t need any decorations. As evening falls, there are corners of the city that tell their own stories. All you have to do is get close and listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Go down to the Chamber\u00ed ghost station<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You walk down the stairs and time stands still. Vintage advertising tiles, empty ticket booths, signs that no longer announce anything. The <strong>old Chamber\u00ed station<\/strong>, known as And\u00e9n 0 (Platform 0), has been closed to passengers for decades while today\u2019s trains keep rushing past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4BcZ6n8yWnk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4BcZ6n8yWnk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halloween<\/a>, it usually lives up to its nickname with theatrical tours on specific days in late October and early November. They\u2019re free, places go fast and booking is required, so it\u2019s worth keeping an eye on their programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Follow a ghost and legends route through the city centre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrid has more stories than streets. And some of them aren\u2019t told in broad daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the <strong>Palacio de Linares<\/strong>, they say you can still hear a little girl called Raimundita. On the rooftops of the <strong>Casa de las Siete Chimeneas<\/strong> (House of the Seven Chimneys), some claim to have seen a lady dressed in white walking. Every old doorway seems to hide a secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can do the route on your own, with a good story on your phone and someone\u2019s arm to grab, or on a guided night tour. Whether you believe in ghosts matters least. What matters most is the shared shiver and the burst of laughter that comes right after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Find the Fallen Angel in El Retiro<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the heart of <strong>El Retiro<\/strong>, among strollers and fallen leaves, stands one of the few statues in the world dedicated to Lucifer. The <strong>Fountain of the Fallen Angel<\/strong> captures the exact moment of his fall, with a coiled serpent and an expression that still makes an impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legend also has it that it stands 666 metres above sea level. Myth or coincidence, at Halloween the walk takes on an eerie edge it has at no other time of year. And it costs nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Watch classic horror films at Cineteca Madrid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some scares are best enjoyed in the dark and in good company. For Halloween, <strong>Cineteca Madrid<\/strong>, at Matadero, is running a special season on fantaterror, the distinctly Spanish fantasy and horror cinema of the 1970s, with titles such as <em>La endemoniada<\/em> and <em>Las melanc\u00f3licas<\/em>. On 1 November it also premieres the restored version of <em>Invasi\u00f3n travesti<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a plan for friends or couples, sharing armrests and squeezing hands at just the right moment.
