A lot of family activities already feel too childish to them, but plenty of things aimed at adults don't interest them either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that Madrid has much more to offer than the usual stroll around the city centre. You can hunt for clothes and vinyl at El Rastro, follow stories of ghosts and crimes, row a boat in El Retiro, climb a wall, fly in a wind tunnel, look at the city from a viewpoint, or work out why a photo that looks impossible has no digital trickery at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some ideas for when the classic \"what shall we do today?\" needs a slightly different answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">1. Follow Madrid's stories of ghosts, crimes and legends<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Madrid de los Austrias and the Barrio de las Letras feel very different when the talk moves beyond monuments to stories of <strong>witchcraft, murders, mysteries and legends.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some routes are dedicated entirely to this lesser-known side of Madrid. There are even treasure-hunt-style tours where you follow clues as you discover different parts of the city. Turismo Madrid lists these visits among the most original ways to get to know the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a teenager who isn't too excited about a traditional history tour, starting with an eerie story can be a far better way of finding out who lived in that building or what happened on that street centuries ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History, yes. But with a few ghosts along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">2. Go to El Rastro with a budget and a challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Rastro can easily become much more than \"going to a flea market\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea can be as simple as setting a budget (10, 15 or 20 euros) and hunting for the <strong>weirdest T-shirt, a vinyl record, an old book, some outrageous sunglasses or the strangest object you can find among the stalls.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market has around 1,200 stalls spread across the streets of La Latina and Embajadores, and it runs on Sunday and public holiday mornings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turismo Madrid specifically recommends it for teenagers because of its mix of clothes, books, shoes, paintings and records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterwards, extend the plan with a wander around La Latina, and a morning that seemed simple can end up going a lot further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">3. Row a boat on El Retiro's lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, <strong>the rowing boats in El Retiro can be a good plan with teenagers too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially if they're the ones doing the rowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each boat holds up to four people and can be rented for 45 minutes. It currently costs 6 euros per boat on weekdays and 8 euros on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lake also has more history than you might think. It was built between 1634 and 1636 and was once used for water shows and re-enactments of naval battles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterwards, you can go looking for hidden corners of the park, take photos by the Palacio de Cristal, or just give them some free time to explore it their own way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everything needs a helmet, VR goggles or a screen to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">4. See Madrid from somewhere you almost never look at it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A change of perspective can be a plan in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<strong> Faro de Moncloa<\/strong>, the Mirador Madrid at the Palacio de Cibeles, the Cerro del T\u00edo P\u00edo and the Templo de Debod each give you a completely different view of the city. Turismo Madrid includes several of them among its top viewpoints and sunset spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also turn it into a small photo challenge: spot the Cuatro Torres, Gran V\u00eda, the mountains, the Royal Palace, or try to get the best sunset shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn't need to be a formal sightseeing trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it's enough to go up, look at Madrid from above and decide where to go next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">5. Go to a concert they've chosen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrid has so much live music that the plan doesn't need to start with \"let's go to a concert\". It can start with something much simpler:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\"Look who's playing this month and pick one.\"<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2026 alone, Madrid's listings range from big concerts at Movistar Arena or Vistalegre to gigs in small venues across very different genres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that's where it differs from other family plans: they get to choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could be a well-known artist, a small band, a festival or even their first ever concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes finding something they're actually interested in works better than trying to find \"an activity for teenagers\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">6. Make the most of Madrid's neighbourhood festivals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another option that changes all year round is<strong> Madrid's local festivals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Isidro, San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma are the best known, but almost every district holds its own festival with concerts, fairground rides, sport and cultural events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2026, the city calendar includes celebrations from January to November in neighbourhoods all over Madrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes for a fairly spontaneous plan: see which neighbourhood has a festival that weekend, check the programme and head over if there's a concert or activity that appeals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And many of the events are free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">7.
